Row counter versus stitch counter

A row counter tracks completed passes; a stitch counter tracks individual stitches or a repeat within one row. Source context ↗

Set the counting rule

Some patterns repeat a stitch sequence several times inside one row. The sequence count should return to zero at the next row, while the row count continues.

Put the rule into practice

WORKED EXAMPLE

In a lace pattern, the row counter may read 12 while the repeat counter reads 4.

Steps for a reliable tally

  1. Name the counters separately.
  2. Update the row tally at the end of a pass and reset the within-row stitch tally at the correct pattern boundary.
  3. At each row end, check that the repeat tally matches the pattern's expected repeats.
  4. A mismatch may reveal a missed stitch sequence before you continue.

Why this detail matters

Stitches on a needle and stitches already worked are different quantities. Name a stitch counter for the specific position you want to remember. If you change needles mid-row, the row tally should stay still while the within-row tally continues. This is why one shared number is easily misread.

At the project

Label each counter with both project and unit, such as “scarf rows” and “row 8 repeats.” A counter named only “4” or “stitches” is easy to misread after a day away. Before restarting, compare the last completed row and the current stitch position with the pattern's next instruction.

What can go wrong?

One number cannot tell you both the current row and your position inside a long repeat.
