Set the counting rule
Zone boundaries should be physical and unmistakable. A line between two shelves is easier to honor than an informal instruction to count half an aisle.
Put the rule into practice
One employee counts shelves A1–A4 while another takes A5–A8, then both sign off their totals.

Steps for a reliable tally
- Draw clear boundaries at aisle or shelf level.
- Give each person their own item list and save the time of completion.
- Review discrepancies with a second count.
- Give each zone a completion mark and responsible person's initials.
- Compare the zone map with the final exported counts to find omissions.
Why this detail matters
A supervisor should make sure no zone belongs to two people and no zone belongs to nobody. Count sheets or exported counter files can be checked against the zone map. If the store stays open, document sales and transfers that occur between the first and last zone counts.
On the shelf
At the end, compare the number of assigned zones with the number of returned files or sheets. A missing file is not a zero count. When two workers counted the same zone, keep both observations and reconcile them rather than adding them. Staff initials and completion times can explain which observation was valid.
What can go wrong?
Two staff counting the same shelf can double the reported stock.
