How to count product variants

Give each size, color or pack configuration its own tally rather than combining a product family. Source context ↗

Set the counting rule

Packaging can make two variants look nearly identical. Barcode or SKU labels are safer than relying on color at a glance.

Put the rule into practice

WORKED EXAMPLE

A rack with small, medium and large sizes needs three variant counts even if the style name matches.

Steps for a reliable tally

  1. Read the variant label before each count.
  2. Use a separate counter for each SKU and location, then compare each result with the matching system line.
  3. Before combining results, read back every variant name and quantity.
  4. If two labels share a name, add size, color or pack count to the counter label.

Why this detail matters

A variant may have its own barcode even when neighboring packages look identical. Sorting them first reduces rapid mis-taps. If a label is missing, set the item aside for identification instead of pushing it into the nearest-looking variant. Keep uncertain stock separate until the SKU is confirmed.

On the shelf

Work one variant at a time and move completed products to a clearly marked area if the layout allows. When items cannot move, mark the shelf segment you finished. A photo of the label can help resolve similar names later, but it should not replace the recorded SKU and quantity.

What can go wrong?
