Set the counting rule

For a fair tally, the response categories must be understandable to all students. The chart can become a lesson about how data is collected as well as the final result.

Put the rule into practice

WORKED EXAMPLE

With 23 ballots, choice totals of 8, 9 and 6 reconcile to the class count.

Steps for a reliable tally

  1. Read the question aloud, collect one response per student, and keep a separate tally for each option.
  2. Add the category totals and compare with the number of ballots.
  3. Ask students to sum the categories and compare with ballots cast.
  4. If the totals differ, review the ballots instead of changing an answer by guesswork.

Why this detail matters

Let students verify the total without exposing individual choices if the vote is private. A public category tally can be filled after anonymous ballots are collected. If the class is studying data, discuss how a missing ballot or a choice outside the listed categories changes the chart.

During the session

After tallying, ask learners which choice had the most votes and how they know. The marks support a discussion about totals, ties and missing responses. If the classroom has 25 students but only 23 ballots, explain the two missing votes before claiming the chart describes the whole class.

What can go wrong?
